Inside ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ societies: Maths Society

Joining a society linked to your subject is a fantastic way of gaining access to a range of events, making new friends and enriching your ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ experience. We talk to President Miles McCrory to go inside the Maths Society and find out what’s on offer.

¿Û¿Û´«Ã½â€™s Maths Society is a friendly community of maths students – from first year undergraduates up to PhD level – as well as students from other disciplines including physics and psychology.

The Society’s busy social programme this year has included a ‘meet and greet’ event during Welcome Week, Halloween bar crawl, quizzes and a Rubix basement night in collaboration with other ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ societies. There have also been guest speakers from organisations such as NPL (National Physical Laboratory).

President Miles McCrory says: “Every Friday in collaboration with the School of Maths and Physics we organise a talk or seminar with an industry speaker or PhD student, and everyone gathers afterwards to socialise. These events are a really good way to get to know lecturers in a more casual setting, and that really helps when you go back into lecturers: you’re more confident to ask questions.â€

Plans for later in the year include more socials, coffee catch-ups, industry talks and a trip to the Guildford Spectrum for ice-skating.

Asked why students should join the Society, Miles says: “It’s a great place for anyone with an interest in maths to find like-minded people. University is a big place and you can feel a bit lost so it’s nice to know there’s this community of people you can join.â€

Maths Society member Tom Marsh adds: “Going to Maths Soc sessions has been an excellent way for me to socialise with other students as well as academics, and to build a real sense of community while learning interesting things from the Amazing Maths Seminars.â€
