Exploring human-AI interaction for real-time speech-to-text: a comparative process and product-oriented analysis.This project delves into cutting-edge human-AI interactions in the realm of real-time communication, with a focus on respeaking, a dynamic speech-to-text practice that bridges the gap between language professionals and speech recognition technology. Respeaking is a transformative tool often utilized intralingually to provide live subtitles for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community in the same language. However, the frontier of research, exemplified by the ESRC-funded SMART project led by CTS, is pushing the boundaries, exploring how human linguistic expertise can be seamlessly integrated into the intricate art of interlingual respeaking – delivering live subtitles in a different language.
In light of the existing research gap, this Ph.D. program is dedicated to bridging the void by conducting comprehensive studies on the intricacies of intra- and inter-lingual respeaking carried out by language professionals on a large scale, meticulously analyzing and triangulating an untapped wealth of empirical data from the SMART project. Leveraging a unique experimental and exploratory mixed-method approach, this research sets out to unearth valuable insights that will not only enrich the academic sphere but also redefine best practices in these emergent hybrid techniques.
