PAI Director Dr Andrew Rogoyski spoke at event hosted by University Of The Third Age and U3A Australia

On Friday 20 June, PAI Director Dr Andrew Rogoyski spoke at an online event hosted by the University Of The Third Age (U3A) and U3A Australia. Dr Rogoyski examined AI technologies that will support people in accessing information services. He also discussed PAI’s research, and the commercial activity that has spun-out from it, such as Signapse, with its breakthrough advancements in sign language translation technology. The talk also touched on the development of so-called companion AI, which is being used in care of older adults, among other application areas. Among those involved in the conference is Michael, a U3AA member doing a PhD on AI in the U3A. He explores the unique strengths of older people (their superpowers) through the idea of "eldragogy"—a teaching approach tailored to mature learners who use AI.

PAI Director Dr Andrew Rogoyski spoke on AI at the Pint of Science UK Festival in Guildford on 20th May. He explored the rapid rise of AI and its unexpected impact on jobs and business sectors. He discussed potential applications of Generative AI in creative industries and the social care of older adults. 

PAI Fellow Professor Professor Prashant Kumar discussed innovations in clean air research, a key topic in health and sustainability, both of which are core tenets of PAI.

Dr Andrew Rogoyski delivers keynote for Waverley Borough and Guildford Borough Councils' Business Question Time

PAI Director Dr Andrew Rogoyski delivered the keynote when business leaders and thinkers gathered for Waverley Borough Council and Guildford Borough Council's Business Question Time on 19 May. With PAI's work at the forefront of AI and its implications for society and the economy, Dr Rogoyski's insights were keenly appreciated.

The evening at historic Farnham Castle was a thoughtful discussion on the current economic landscape and future opportunities within the region.

A panel of notable figures from diverse sectors offered their perspectives, including: Malcolm Glaister, CEO of Sirius Insight; Liana Fricker FRSA; Dr Juliet Jones, Founder and COO of NatureMetrics; Russ Avery, Founder & Head of Strategy at Avery & Brown | B Corpâ„¢; Gemma McBride, Partner at Baker Law Group, PLLC and Chair of Farnham Business Improvement District; and Alexander Goncharuk, Global Head of BFSI at Intellias.
 

The session was chaired by broadcaster Peter Gordon, ensuring a lively and engaging exchange. 
 

PAI Seminar: Companion AI

PAI’s 12 February seminar on Companion AI brought together a fascinating mix of perspectives on how artificial intelligence might help address the challenges of ageing populations. What emerged was a complex picture of both opportunities and concerns around this emerging technology. The speakers emphasised that implementation must be thoughtful and ethical. It's not just about what technology can do, but about how it can truly enhance human well-being and support, rather than replace, human connection. Maintaining focus on people-centred design and meaningful human connection will be crucial to realising the potential of Companion AI while avoiding its pitfalls.

PAI's 4th Health Workshop

On 11th December 2024, the PAI Fellows community gathered for the 4th Health Workshop at PAI HQ, organised by Fellow Dr Ayse Demirkan of the School of Biosciences. The researchers explored the opportunities of using AI for genetic prediction in pan-University health research areas, including veterinary medicine, mental health, patient-centred genetic counselling, drug target identification, and disease prediction. The workshop featured presentations from leading PAI-Fellow researchers across the University, as well as our honoured guest, Szymon Szyszkowski from Sanger Institute.
