Our research addresses fundamental questions and processes in quantum physics, such as decoherence and entanglement. Our aim is to link open quantum systems dynamics with statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, at both the classical and quantum levels.

We focus on the mathematical structures that underpin fundamental physical theories including quantum field theories such as Chern—Simons and Yang—Mills theories as well as gravitational theories such as supergravity and string theory.

In quantum computation, a number of challenges need overcoming. Our group is actively engaged in developing new techniques for reduction of error rates in quantum gates and in the study of noise-robust states in topological superconductors and insulators.

The ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ is now established as a world-leading centre in the new interdisciplinary field of quantum biology. Members of our group collaborate with colleagues in chemistry and molecular biology to investigate the potential role of quantum mechanics in living systems.

Our research focuses on controlling optical properties of materials through hyperuniform disordered structure. We aim to identify new ways to control quantum dynamics in superconducting qubits, and novel non-linear optical effects.

We develop new strategies to produce quantum qubits, sensors and emitters using defects in solids with ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½â€™s National Ion Beam Centre — Controlling and characterising their properties through use of Free Electron Lasers, high magnetic fields and synchrotrons.
