Martin has broad and varied experience across technology and markets with a firm commercial sense.

He is an experienced systems and technology analyst, architect, inventor and developer as well as a commercial pioneer and Firestarter of businesses.

Martin has 40+ years of driving bleeding-edge innovations to market within applied distributed computation, communications, infrastructure management, internet and IoT, satellite navigation, GIS, digital media and content convergence technology.

His interests span machine perception and cognition, command and control, distributed connected systems, fault-tolerant autonomous self-healing solutions and all things audio-visual.

He is currently CTO at NETmc a group focused on the exploitation of the convergence of network, media and communications technologies to enhance, enrich and empower.

Katie is Certification Test Manager at Consult Hyperion and a ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ alumni. Katie graduated in 2009 with a BSc in Computing and Information Technology including a one-year work placement experience. After graduating she returned to her placement company (Consult Hyperion) as a full-time member of staff where she became a dedicated tester. Today she is a Test Manager with 15+ years’ experience in testing and payments technology, specifically contactless transactions.

Katie creates test plans and manages the testing of applications across a variety of technologies including smart cards, payment terminals and card readers, web services and sites, databases, mobile phones and tablets using both custom and industry standard test tools. Katie works with clients across the payments industry including banks, acquirers, issuers and device manufacturers. Often working with innovative technologies or new uses for existing technologies while testing proof of concepts or pilot products. Since 2011 Katie has been supervisor to computing placement students from the university and is now bringing her experience back to the department as a member of the IAB.

Has an MEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and an EMBA both from ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½. He started his early career in the defence sector in ECM Systems prototyping and development. He moved to NEC Corporation at the start of 3G leading software and hardware development before moving into a systems role and heading joint venture engagements in various areas of telecom base stations development for 3G and 4G/LTE. He joined Real Wireless, a UK-based consultancy with a global client base, in 2016 as CTO and is now CEO. Real Wireless covers the full spectrum of wireless systems innovation from the early technologies to the operational systems through built environment deployment, policy and regulation, and techno-economics. Advising Government policy makers and CxO in industry and the university sectors. He is the Chief Strategy Officer for a global industry trade association forum addressing the mobile small cell network market. 

Julian studied BSc (Hons) Computing and Information Technology at the Department of Computing, graduating in 1993.

After departing university, Julian worked for a number of large-scale IT departments, software companies and consultancies, firstly as developer and later in a diverse set of software delivery roles. This broad experience, together with the scale of the projects and organisations he worked with, led him to set up his own consulting business in 2007.

In 2016 became a Principal Consultant for Thoughtworks, leading large-scale transformation projects for Thoughtworks clients, to help them increase their software development efficiency and establish an effective software delivery organisation.

After 10 years at Thoughtworks, Julian now operates as an independent consultant, continuing to bring his experience to new clients.

Outside of the workplace Julian is highly active in his local squash community, playing and organising the game at both a club and county level.

Richard Lowe graduated from the ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ in 2012 having completed his degree in Computing Science. After spending his placement year at Microsoft, Richard returned as a graduate, working as a Software Engineer Consultant.

After 7 years, Richard left Microsoft to join Amazon, primarily working on Machine Learning applications and distributed systems.

Outside of work, Richard is an avid long-distance runner, and big fan of playing and watching football (only Manchester United).

Dr Pawel Matusz is the Head of R&D at Rohde and Schwarz UK. He holds an Executive MBA from the ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ (2016) and a Ph.D. in Telecommunications from Gdansk University of Technology (2006), where he also earned his MSc in Computer Science (1999). Currently, he is the Head of R&D at Rohde and Schwarz UK, having previously served as Director of Engineering at Anritsu UK. Prior to that he held several management and technical roles at Intel. He is also the founder of Infiniconcept, a small provider of voice-based applications.

Pawel's expertise lies in mobile communications, ranging from 3G to 6G, IoT, and NTN, with a keen interest in machine learning and voice user interfaces. He actively participates in technical and business forums such as 3GPP, NGMN, and CTIA, and since January 2025, he has been the Vice Chair of the Global Certification Forum Conformance Agreement Group. He has spoken at several conferences and authored or co-authored multiple publications, white papers, and standards contributions.

Malcolm is Chief Technology Officer at SGN, the company that manages the gas infrastructure in Scotland and the south of England. In this role Malcolm is the strategic leader for the firm’s digital and data transformation, meeting regulatory commitments, driving up customer service and business performance. Malcolm leads on technical and business architecture, data and analytics, strategic planning, and IT investment.

Prior to SGN Malcolm was CTO at Defra, the government department, and a member of the Senior Civil Service. He graduated from the ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ in 1998, also has an MBA from Kingston University, is a Chartered engineer and a Fellow of the British Computer Society.

PA Consulting is an innovation and transformation consultancy that specialises in strategy, technology and innovation. PA has clients in both the private and public sector, ranging from start-ups to national governments. Specifically, PA specialises in seven industries: consumer and manufacturing; defence and security; energy and utilities; financial services; public services; healthcare and life sciences; and transport. It operates in these industries from offices across the UK, US, Nordics and the Netherlands.

Neil Simpson graduated from the ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ in 1995 having completed his degree in Computing & Information Technology. Having spent his placement year at the IBM UK Scientific Centre, Neil returned to IBM as a graduate programmer working at IBM's Development Laboratory in Hursley, Hampshire.

Two years later, Neil was seconded to the Human Resources department undertaking a number of roles including Human Resources Adviser and Hursley Recruitment Officer. Following a spell working in Paris as the Workforce Manager for Sales and Distribution for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Neil returned to the Laboratory and to software development management.

His current role is Delivery Manager for IBM Decision Runtime on z/OS. Neil started on the Industrial Advisory Board a long time ago as a Graduate representative and has been involved ever since. Outside of work, Neil enjoys long-distance walking, SCUBA diving and is qualified as a Rescue Diver.

Dr Anthony Phipps started his career as and Electrical and Electronic engineer and moved progressively towards computing and technology during the 1990s. For the last 25 years he has specialised in cyber and physical security. He currently works at Lloyds Banking Group as the Security Consultancy and Design lead, managing a team of security engineers and architect consultants that look after payment systems and commercial banking. 

He has participated in a number of academic and industry partnerships and has a keen interest in research. He has a first degree from the University of Greenwich in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, a masters degree in IT Security Management from the University of Westminster and a PhD from London Metropolitan University.

He has been involved with the University for many years with activities that have included onsite and remote lectures, recruitment events, career advice sessions, student placements, advisory board activities such as advice on content and direction of courses, and supporting and collaborating on research.

Sony is one of the leading manufacturers of electronic products for the consumer and professional markets.

Adrian received his BSc in Mathematics from the ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ in 1992, and a PhD in Mathematics from Royal Holloway, University of London in 1996. After a year as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Ljubljana, Adrian joined what is now Thales in 1997.  

Adrian is an Information Assurance researcher in Thales with over 25 years’ experience in secure mission critical information systems programmes. Adrian has skills and experience in all areas of information security, but with a particular interest in cryptography and security architectures. He manages and supervises placement projects at Thales UK.

Adrian actively contributes to guest lecturers on our MSc in Cyber Security programme. Adrian is also actively involved in the wider research community, including his role as a ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ing Professor at the ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ and on the university advisory board at Queen’s University Belfast. He has co-supervised several PhD students and is an experienced external examiner.

Simon studied at Cambridge University, completing undergraduate studies in Natural Sciences and Engineering and then earning a PhD in Electronic Engineering in 2001, specialising in optoelectronics and applied device physics. He continued in this field of research and development, followed by work in the semiconductor industry, designing & manufacturing lasers for telecoms applications. In 2004, Simon joined Detica (which later became BAE Systems) as a consultant engineer. Since then, he has worked in the field of data acquisition, network processing and intelligence systems for cybersecurity, national security and law enforcement. His experience includes system engineering of complex solutions for major UK and international customers as well as engineering and general management, running the company’s Network Intelligence and then the Electronic Systems business areas. Simon ran the Product Engineering area of the International Government business in BAE Systems. He is currently Head of Engineering within the National Security & Government Business area in BAE Systems Digital Intelligence, with responsibility for the combined UK, International and product development portfolio in the business unit, leading over 1,200 Engineers in our offices across the globe.

Daniel Woolley joined the BBC as a graduate engineer in 1997, having obtained an honours degree in Electronics with Music from the University of Glasgow. After working on numerous digital television projects for 13 years, he joined the BBC World Service Distribution team in 2010, overseeing a diverse range of projects including civil engineering works at overseas short wave relay stations, a new disaster recovery facility in the UK, re-engineering satellite links, and internet distribution feeds to partners. Daniel has been Head of Development Projects for BBC International Services Distribution since 2017, is a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Audio Engineering Society, and is a Chartered Engineer. He recently graduated with a Masters in Business and Strategic Leadership from Cranfield University.
