You’ll use simulation learning to put theory into practice, using your clinical skills on actors and lifelike manikins. Through this, you’ll get a taste of scenarios you may face during your placements – and when you’re fully qualified.

Immersive Learning Environment

Our state-of-the-art Immersive Learning Environment uses projection technologies and the latest audio-visual and sensory equipment to place you at the centre of clinical scenarios, psychologically removing you from the classroom. Typical scenes include:

• Busy nightclubs where noise and lights are obstacles to overcome.
• An air ambulance helicopter landing and taking off, so can simulate receiving and transferring critical patients under pressure.

With the flexibility to use all the equipment found in our other facilities, you’ll never experience the same situation twice.

Our Critical Care Unit is a multi-functional space that can be used as an A&E, birthing suite, intensive care unit and an operating theatre. With birthing beds, two working anaesthetic machines, an operating table and a host of clinical equipment, you’ll get to replicate several scenarios, including births, resuscitation and surgical procedures.

We have two 8-bed Nightingale wards, designed to look and operate like typical wards you’d find in the NHS. Kitted with the latest clinical equipment for assessments and moving and handling, you’ll get to practise all the skills associated with patient care. You’ll face a host of different scenarios here, from simple communication exercises to complex and multidisciplinary issues.

Our Community Flat will transport you to the heart of a patient’s home, immersing you into a non-clinical environment. Here, you’ll get to experience increasingly challenging scenarios, from falls to home births, tackling the unknown with limited equipment. You’ll practise giving antenatal and postnatal check-ups, providing emergency care, carrying out mental health assessments and checking wounds, alongside safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.

Our purpose-built Ambulance Bay comes with a fully functioning ambulance, equipped with everything you’d find in the NHS, including defibrillators, trolleys and carry chairs. As a trainee paramedic, you’ll use this equipment to monitor patients’ vitals, load and unload them into the vehicle, and safely transport them to receive further care. You’ll become familiar with your mobile treatment environment, made more realistic using lights and sounds.

You’ll encounter:

• Physical injuries, such as fractures or spinal complications, where moving patients is challenging.
• Cardiac and respiratory problems with a need to monitor patients closely, responding in real time using the equipment and techniques at your disposal.
• Human factors, from sensitive emotional situations to volatile mental health scenarios.

Outside of practical sessions, you can book and use our Independent Clinical Learning Space which is set up with assessment equipment and basic life support gear. You can use this to practise CPR, taking blood pressures, cannulating patients, and the other techniques you’ll learn.
